Chinquapin oak is a very hardy oak that can grow on a rocky thin layer of soil over limestone. We can eat the acorns raw and they have a sweet taste. They grow up to 30 m tall and will provide wonderful shade.
Ecology:
Oaks are the most beneficial trees when it comes to producing ample caterpillars which birds rely on to feed their young. Breeding success of birds is directly linked to abundant caterpillars since even a 3-gram black-capped chickadee requires 9000 caterpillars within 3 weeks for their clutch.
The acorns are eaten by chipmunks, squirrels, wild turkeys and other birds.
Growing conditions:
Requires full sun and well-drained soil.
