 LANDSCAPE FOR POLLINATORS

A Pollinator Garden with Native Plants brings joy and awe that even the most beautiful ornamental flowers can never bring because introduced plants miss the deeper connection to the whole ecosystem and the essence of life.

In the big picture, your pollinator garden helps draw carbon into the soil and counteracts climate change. By matching the right plants to the place you care for, you create habitat and will see biodiversity increase quickly in front of your eyes.

NUTRIENT CYCLING IS THE KEY TO FERTILE SOIL

What you do:

  • Book a biological soil examination of your garden or compost.

  • Follow the instructions on how to collect the sample.

  • Send a small soil sample by mail, drop it off, or get it picked up.

  • Let us know what is growing in the area of the soil sample or how you made the compost.

  • Let us know what you would like to grow in this soil or compost.

We examine the sample:

  • For beneficial soil organisms, like nematodes and other organisms, that provide nutrient cycling.

  • We examine the sample for organisms that indicate compacted and anaerobic soil conditions, like ciliates and rotifers.

You receive the following:

  • You will get digital pictures of the different functional groups of the organisms in your soil with their job description.

  • You will receive suggestions on how to improve your soil or compost.

Soil that is alive is the foundation of a healthy and low-maintenance garden. Bacteria, Protozoa,  Amoebae, and Nematodes all play a role in nutrient cycling. Fungal hyphae in symbiosis with plant roots can make your garden more self-sufficient. The symbiotic fungal networks, as an extension of plant roots, make plants more drought-resistant and fungi, as chemical wizards, will supply the plants with all required nutrients.

In the big picture, fungi store carbon longer and in higher concentrations in their hyphae than plants and therefore provide a key solution in storing huge amounts of carbon in the soil. Even in your garden, you can create conditions to promote the underground network of fungi through less but more thoughtful maintenance practices, and you will help to counteract climate change. As a side effect, the soil chemistry will change and bring your garden into a more advanced successional state that will not allow weeds to dominate.

Talks can be held in person or over Zoom. The following topics are available with a slide show:

  • Create a beautiful, low-maintenance Pollinator Garden

  • Why are Native Plants the Answer to the Biodiversity Crisis

  • Native Plants in the City, Why Every Garden and Balcony Counts

  • Garden Maintenance with Pollinators in Mind

  • How Soil and Nutrient Cycling Work

  • How to grow Native Plants from Seed

  • How to tweak our Traditional Garden Practices to invite Pollinators back into our Gardens

  • How Vegetable Growers benefit from Native Plants

  • How to Create a Woodland Garden

I am very passionate about solutions to counteract climate change, biodiversity loss and loss of human mental and physical health caused by alienation from nature. I have been studying native plants and their associated fauna, as well as soil and societal norms, for the last four years. Science and traditional Indigenous knowledge offer powerful and often very simple solutions to these daunting problems of our time.  I have gained practical knowledge through the experience of converting my garden into a pollinator paradise, organizing community volunteer work and sharpening my observation skills. We are in a time where positive environmental change gets embraced at an exponential pace.  Therefore, I am passionate about spreading love and admiration for our nature. This spark will often set people on fire, or as the elders say wake up the blood memory to reconnect, act and inspire.
