Monarch Garden
GREAT NEWS!
Monarch population has almost doubled to 1.79 hectares of forest they occupied overwintering compared to last year with 0.9 hectares. But we still have lots of work to do. In spring 2023 there were 2.21 hectares and in 1997 18 hectares.
Let's get ready for the monarchs to provide them with food and habitat.
In late May, monarchs reach Ontario and need milkweed to lay their eggs on to reproduce. Milkweed is the only food source for monarch caterpillars.
In the fall, monarchs need late season nectar to fuel up before migrating over Lake Erie and to Oyamel Fir forests of Mexico.
