Buttonbush, Cephalanthus occidentalis
Buttonbush is a fast-growing shrub that can reach 3 m in height. Its very unusual, beautiful white globular flowers bloom in August and fill the air with a honey fragrance. After flowering, the flowers still look attractive by turning first red and then dark brown.
Ecology:
Bees and butterflies enjoy its nectar, and mainly water birds its seeds. It is the host plant for many moth species.
Growing conditions:
Buttonbush likes moist and wet soil. It thrives in full and partial sun and in any soil, even compacted soil. An ideal location is close to the downspout, in a rain garden, or at the edge of a pond.
