Soft Landing

Trees are the most important host plants for many different insects, including butterflies. Many insects need a safe place to land when they let themselves fall off trees to complete their metamorphoses. Lawns are compacted and get mowed; therefore, it is important to create soft landings for insects under native trees. Trees will also stay healthier if they grow alongside other native plants and spread their roots in well-structured soil rather than compacted lawn soil.
