Running strawberry, Euonymous obovatus
A fast-growing groundcover for woodlands and shaded spots! Cute flowers in hues of green and pink bloom in spring and will produce very attractive red fruits. They are first contained in a funky, spiky, pinkish-white fruit capsule that opens to show off the red fruit, typical of euonymous plants. In the fall, the dense foliage turns beautiful shades of purples and pinks. It is a fast-growing woody vine that reaches up to 1.20 m in length.
Ecology:
Running strawberry is the host plant for many moth species and provides nectar and pollen to small bees and flies. Wild turkeys and other birds eat the fruit.
Growing conditions:
Running strawberry occurs on slopes, cliffs and rocky soil in wooded, shaded sites. It grows alongside deciduous trees and conifers. In the garden, it is a wonderful groundcover for partially sunny to shaded sites. It prefers loamy, rocky, moist, rich soil, but can grow in clay as well as long as the soil is well-drained. It will grow in slightly dry soil once it is established.
