Serviceberry, Amelanchier canadensis

A culinary treat for humans and wildlife alike. Showy white flowers bloom in early spring, providing one of the first sources of nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies. Followed by delicious edible berries in June that are a favourite of many birds. Serviceberry is a large shrub or can be pruned to a small tree that typically grows 5-10 m tall. The leaves change to a stunning, vibrant orange-red in autumn, and the smooth gray bark provides winter interest.

Ecology:

Serviceberry's early spring blooms support pollinators after winter and the sweet edible berries are feasted on by many bird species.
