Woodland sunflower, Helianthus divaricatus
Woodland sunflower enlivens shady edges and woodland clearings with cheerful yellow blooms. It flowers from midsummer to mid-fall, providing extended season colour. The plant can grow to 60 cm -1.80 m tall.
Ecology:
Sunflowers, like asters and goldenrod, are considered keystone species, entertaining extensive ecological connections with wildlife.
Highly attractive to pollinators, including long-tongued bees, short-tongued bees, butterflies, and beneficial wasps. Specialist pollinators include seven species of native bees. Larval host plant for over 70 species of butterflies and moths, including Silvery Checkerspot, Gorgone Checkerspot, and Painted Lady. The fairly large seeds are favoured by songbirds, doves, and small mammals.
Growing conditions:
Tolerates a wide range of well-drained soils, including sandy, loamy, or rocky. Prefers part shade but adapts to full sun in moist conditions. Drought-tolerant once established. Spreads by rhizomes to form colonies over time. May be too vigorous for small gardens in ideal conditions. Easy to grow and low maintenance.
