Spotted Joe Pye, Eutrichum maculatum
Joe Pye "weed" is a stunning, long-blooming butterfly magnet. It is a versatile garden beauty with a high wildlife value. It can grow between 1.20 m and, in moister areas of your garden, up to 1.60 m tall.
Ecology:
The dusted pink umbrel-shaped flower clusters have an inviting form, with a large landing pad. The many small disc florets provide abundant, easily accessible nectar for short- and long-tongued bees. Bumble bees are among the few bees that collect pollen from Joe Pye delight. The flowers are a butterfly magnet. Its pollen supports pollen specialist bees, which can only use Joe Pye pollen to make bee bread and provision their brood cells. The leaves are food for different moth species. In the fall and winter, goldfinches and other songbirds feed on the seeds. The strong, hollow stems provide ideal nesting sites for stem-nesting insects.
Growing conditions:
Spotted Joe Pye weed is naturally found in moister areas, such as moist meadows, alluvial forests that experience seasonal flooding and swamps. That makes them ideal plants for rain gardens or next to your downspout. Joe Pye is very adaptable in the garden, and can grow in full or partial sun, any moisture and any soil.
