Wintergreen, Gaultheria procumbens
Wintergreen, also called Teaberry, is a low-growing, creeping groundcover in the heath family with leathery, tough, shiny, very aromatic leaves. The leaves have a strong, sweet, fresh, minty, spicy aroma, produced by methyl salicylate.
Ecology:
Small white flowers produce bright red berries that dangle under the leaves and are loved by wildlife.
Growing conditions:
As a member of the Ericaceae family, wintergreen grows in acidic soil in part shade, ideally under trees in well-drained conditions. It prefers dappled shade but can grow in full shade. It prefers a cool environment.
Up to 25 cm tall. It can create dense colonies in ideal conditions.
