Foxglove beardtongue, Penstemon digitalis
Foxglove beardtongue is an airy plant with showy white flowers. The flowers bloom right when the spring flowers have finished, and the summer bloomers still take their time (May - June). It is clump-forming and looks stunning when planted in groups. Its moderate height, delicate and orderly look, salt tolerance, and resistance to rabbits and deer make it an ideal candidate for a boulevard or front garden. Its leaves turn great fall colours, and the basal leaves stay burgundy-purple-green all winter. Attractive seed capsules add interest through fall and winter.
Ecology:
The narrow tubular flowers attract small to medium-sized long-tongued bees, bumble bees, hummingbirds, and other beneficial insects. They also support pollen-specialist bees and even a pollen-collecting wasp. Most wasps are your garden-police and get their protein from pests.
Growing conditions:
Foxglove beartongue grows naturally in prairies, meadows, open woodlands, and forest edges.
In the garden, foxglove beardtongue thrives in full to partial sun in well-drained soils. It is very easy to grow and not fussy.
