Sweet grass is an aromatic cool-season grass that greens early in the season with long, soft leaves that grow 30 to 60 cm tall. Its beautiful fragrance reminds of vanilla. In ideal conditions, it spreads by rhizomes. Sweetgrass contains phytol and coumarin, two chemicals that are known to repel mosquitoes.

Growing conditions:

Sweet grass requires full to part sun and medium to moist soil. and is adaptable to different soil types.

Cultural significance:

Sweetgrass (Wiingashk) is one of the "Four Sacred Medicines" (alongside sage, cedar, and tobacco) and is used to teach kindness, love, and respect. As the "hair of Mother Earth," it serves in smudging ceremonies; its sweet, vanilla-like scent acts as a calming agent, attracting positive energies, clearing negativity, and inviting good spirits.

It is braided with 21 blades, seven blades per strand, honouring the Seven Generations.

I highly recommend reading the book "Braiding Sweetgrass" by Robin Wall Kimmerer.
