Turtlehead, Chelone glabra

 

Turtlehead has large white flowers resembling a turtle's head that flower in July and August.  It grows between 60 cm and 1.20 m tall and is naturally found in wetland edges and moist meadows.

 

Ecology:

Nectar plant for bumblebees and other smaller bees that are strong enough to pry open the flowers. Attracts hummingbirds.

Host plant to the Baltimore checkerspot butterfly.

 

Growing conditions:

Grows best in any kind of moist soil in full sun, but can also grow in part sun. This makes it an ideal plant for a rain garden.
