Blue-eyed grass, Sisyrinchium montanum

Not a grass, but an iris. This little plant provides early season nectar and pollen to bees blooming from late spring to early summer.

As a very short plant, it is perfect for boulevards and the front of borders. This short-lived perennial will renew its stands by slowly, spreading through rhizomes and self-sowing.

Growing conditions:

In the wild, blue-eyed grass grows in damp, open woods, along stream banks, in open grassy areas, and meadows. During its blooming season, it prefers moist but well-drained soil but can tolerate drier soils later in the year. Can grow in pots.
