Virgin's Bower, Clematis virginiana
A native clematis that can grow quickly to cover a fence in one summer with its beautiful leaves and fragrant white flowers, which bloom in July and August. One plant can have flowers that are male, female or both. As a clematis, it twines around structures and plants. Funcky feathery seed heads appear in fall and last through winter for great winter interest.
Ecology:
This native vine attracts many pollinators, including bees, wasps and flies for nectar.
The dense vines provide excellent cover and nesting sites for birds. It is a host plant for several moth species. Sparrows, finches and other songbirds eat the abundant seed.
Growing conditions:
Virgin's Bower prefers medium to moist soil in sun to part shade. It is a very versatile and adaptable, hardy plant.
