White wood aster, Eurybia divaricata

This short, only up to 1 m tall, aster produces white flowers with yellowish-red to purple centers and blooms from August to October.

White wood aster is an ideal understory plant under trees, providing a soft landing for insects and offering nectar to butterflies and bees.

It is considered a threatened species in Ontario due to habitat loss and degradation, the spread of invasive garlic mustard, and increased deer pressure.

Growing conditions:

Part sun; dry, well-drained soil.
